Soo Locks
Home Up Soo Lock Pics

Sault Ste. Marie Michigan is home for the famous Soo Locks which allow ships to get around the St. Mary's rapids. This also allows you to see the ships right up close while they position themselves to enter the locks; while they are either raised or lowered; or while they exit.

They offer a lock tour which takes you right through the locks and you also see part of the Canadian side. The Canadian lock which was closed for many years has been re-opened. There is nothing to compare with actually being raised or lowered in the lock.

Be sure to visit our camping page to see our comments about Aunne Osborn a very nice campgrounds located right on the river.

While you are at the "Soo" you might want to visit the Tower of History. You can ride an elevator to the top, which is enclosed, for a reasonable charge. From here you can see for miles in all directions. You will also find out some of the other interesting facts about the Soo area.

In June of each year they have Engineer Day at the locks which is the only time visitors are allowed in the control tower for the locks. While we have not been there yet for this event we do want to make it

If you have a chance to visit Sault Ste. Marie Canada you should be all means go to the Bush Airplane museum.
