Home Up Duluth Pics

During the summer of 99 we traveled to Duluth/Superior Minnesota for the first time. We were sort of expecting a small town but were pleasantly surprised to find a nice size community. When you travel from Duluth to Superior you do not realize you have left one town and entered another.

Most of the activity is in Duluth. This where the famous Ariel Lift Bridge is located which is at the entrance to the harbor. This bridge connects the main land with what they call Point Park. Point Park is a great place to lay in the sun on a beautiful beach and swim although the water may not be as warm as you would like.

While in Duluth you really need to take the Vista Harbor Cruise. This was a two hour narrated tour of the harbor and during this trip it does go briefly out into Lake Superior. You can get right up next to ships loading and unloading. We were very pleased with this tour and it is probably one of the best tours we have taken. The cost was about $9.00 per person.

While Duluth is a tourist town we were happy to see that not everything was designed to take advantage of the tourist. For example you could visit the Coast Guard building and tour the exhibits without any charge. You can spend plenty of time right on the edge of the harbor entrance and watch the ships go right by. There are free copies of the Duluth Shipping News available right by the Coast Guard building and Ariel Lift Bridge. This will list shipping activities in the harbor. For those who listen to your scanner radio this is a great place to listen to the activities.

There is also a great train museum located in downtown Duluth. You can take the trolley from the harbor entrance area for a small charge.

When you travel from Duluth to Superior you do not realize you have left one town and entered another. Superior is like the old town of the two. It is where you can visit a Whale Back Ship see historic buildings. Most of the activities are however in Duluth and conveniently located in the Point Park area.

There are many other places to visit in and around the Duluth/Superior area. You could go up the west side of the Lake Superior and see Gooseberry Falls, Twin Harbor, or Split Rock Lighthouse. You could continue on and take the Circle Tour of Lake Superior.
